Triton: A History of Innovation

Since our founding in 1979, Triton has long been known as an innovator. In the early days of our company, we developed and built remarkable scientific equipment for demanding clients like Exxon, General Electric, Magnavox, and the U.S. Navy. They learned that Triton not only has the technological expertise to solve problems, but also has a rare passion for developing technology that makes sense — solutions that are as practical and affordable as they are sophisticated.

Major Milestones

1985 —
The banking industry turned to Triton in 1985 for the development of the world’s first battery-powered and completely portable device for training consumers on an all-new technology: Automated Teller Machines. The ATMjr helped spur a revolution in the banking industry, and it is still used in more than 1,800 financial institutions worldwide. We proved to be such a good fit with the financial industry that over the next few years, we began to focus exclusively on financial services. Almost immediately, we began to deliver innovations that changed the industry.

1989 —
In 1989, Triton developed CAS, the Card Activation System that allows financial institutions to instantly issue ATM cards with custom PINs. Combined with the ATMjr, the technology provided a powerful automated training aid and instant issue solution.

1992 —
In 1992, Triton pioneered in-store cash withdrawals with the introduction of the Scrip terminal, a machine that allows a store’s customers to use an ATM card to generate a voucher that is redeemable for cash at the register. Soon, t housands of Scrip terminals were installed across the United States in convenience stores and casinos providing the consumer with a new outlet for making cash withdrawals.

1994 —
By 1994, consumers’ need to access their funds through easy and quick cash withdrawals led Triton to develop a revolutionary small, convenient, and affordable ATM. Few in the industry were prepared for the impact that the Triton 9500 series cash dispenser would have. ATMs were now a practical possibility for countless non-bank locations.

1997 —
1997 Triton launched the 9600 series in 1997. The machine incorporated a number of ways to help retailers build ATM traffic including an all-new compelling design that allows high-visibility signage and a color screen. Popularity skyrocketed and in 1999, Triton became the second largest ATM manufacturer in the United States, carving a permanent niche in the off-premise market. To date, close to 50,000 Triton 9600 units have been shipped to off-premise locations worldwide.

2000 —
In 2000, Triton was acquired by Dover Corporation. Dover, NYSE-traded (DOV), is a multi-billion dollar diversified manufacturer of a wide range of proprietary products and components for industrial and commercial use. Dover, an organization with annual revenues $5.5 billion, is known as a manufacturer of a wide range of proprietary products and components for industrial and commercial use. The Dover philosophy is to acquire businesses that are focused on product quality, innovation, and exceptional customer service with strong management teams in place. Dover is a global enterprise supplying value-added products and services to thousands of satisfied customers in more than 100 countries around the world.

2002 —
The Triton model 9100 was introduced in 2002 featuring the TMD-100 cash dispensing mechanism, designed and manufactured by Triton for assured reliability, and a full range of security and service features previously found only in far more expensive ATMs. The 9100 is recognized by the industry as the best stand-alone ATM. The 9100 has a patented cabinet design that increases integrity and security while making the unit easier and quicker to install. To date more than 65,379 9100s have been installed.

In late 2002, a strategic agreement between Triton and Transaction Network Services (TNS) enabled Independent ATM Deployers to arrange an end-to-end ATM management solution through just one point of contact, with the established division of Triton called Calypso Europe. The turnkey package incorporates processing, monitoring, authorization, back-office operations, and settlement for many terminal types, including traditional leased-line ATMs and dial-up off-premise ATMs. Triton and TNS expertise in data communications and processing provide a complete service and hardware offering.

2003 —
Financial institutions started reaping the ATM cost/performance ratio benefit resulting from Triton’s success in the retail marketplace. In 2003, Triton released the FT5000, a secure through-the-wall unit, and RL5000 lobby units. The 5000 series leads the market with the utilization of the latest computing platform technology to provide the most cost-competitive feature-rich ATMs available on the market.

2004 —
2004 was a very eventful year for Triton:

In April, Fujitsu and Triton entered into a strategic licensing agreement to provide a broader range of ATM solutions for financial institutions and retailers though the deployment of Fujitsu’s Windows-based Prism software on Triton ATMs.  Prism software supports a standard 912 transaction emulation and uses Microsoft’s industry-standard interface WOSA-XFS enabling the same application to run on any Windows-capable ATM.

In July the Triton Standard interface specifications were open and made available to many manufactures emulating Triton ATMs. This enabled processors and manufacturers to incorporate additional functionality into their ATM platform.

In December Triton announced the RT2000, a smaller low-cost thought-the-wall ATM, that is easy to install and easy to maintain.

A record 120,000 ATMs were shipped to 17 countries around the world.

2005 —
Hurricane Katrina provided a major event and challenge for Triton in late August 2005.  Fortunately Triton had applied innovative thought and practices in the development of its disaster recovery plan. As a result of the forethought and planning, Triton’s Long Beach administrative, manufacturing and production facilities were back on-line within two weeks.

2006 —
In 2006 Triton subsidiary, Calypso acquired the ATM estate and ATM management services of Cash Point Machines and the ATM estate, repair and warehousing operations of InfoCash. The acquisition is part of Triton’s long-term strategy to build on their global success in the ATM industry and provide high-quality, cost-effective ATM equipment, processing, and service for the ATM market. These acquisitions position Triton to provide direct in-country warehousing, parts, repair, and technical service related support for all their products. In addition, Calypso Europe will provide expanded ATM processing, monitoring, and management services.

Triton celebrated the grand opening of a new Memphis facility in July 2006. A part of our plans to provide back up capabilities as a part of our disaster awareness, the Memphis facility houses the company’s technical training department, operations for parts and repair and additional staff for technical support.

2007 —
The FT7000 family of ATMs, a completely new line of terminals designed to provide financial institutions with a full-function ATM at a price that makes financial sense, is introduced. The FT7000 provides banks and credit unions with a total solution for drive-up and walk-up applications.  In addition, the PC platform with the Intel Pentium IV processor running the Microsoft XP Pro operating system and Triton’s Prism application software enable the broadening and customizing of Web delivered services to consumers.

Triton launches the RL2000, an affordable, feature-rich stand-alone ATM with more functionality and standard features than any comparably priced ATM currently in the market, in August 2007.
The RL2000’s innovative design is based on Microsoft’s® Windows® CE operating system and Triton’s X2 mainboard, which makes the RL2000 as reliable as it is affordable.

2008 —
Due to the popularity of and the accelerating demand for the new RL2000, Triton announces the end of life of the 9100. When the last model rolls off the production line, a total of 65,379 9100s had been built and installed in more than 24 countries around the world – perhaps making the 9100 the most popular off-premise ATM ever built.

Triton subsidiary, Calypso, a leader in the ATM transaction processing, reporting and settlement services market, began operations in Australia. On April 14, 2008, Calypso began the largest migration of ATMs to be completed in a single day — 2,808 ATMs.
