By providing your customers with convenient, easy access to an ATM machine, you make money each time the ATM is used. While at the same time you are providing a valuable service for your customers and dealers. As the owner of an ATM you charge cardholders a surcharge fee for the convenience of using your ATM and the bank pays a small interchange fee to the ATM networks for connecting the cardholder. The average surcharge is typically set at $2.00 per transaction. Below is an example of what you might earn by having an ATM on-site for your customers. |

Flea Market Operator Prospers with Triton ATMs Although independent retailers may want to provide ATM services for their customers, the perceived complexity may scare them off. But not to Steve Blakewood, owner of the Farmers and Flea Market in Waldo, Fla., who relies on two Triton ATMs to dispense about $25,000 each weekend to meet the needs of customers and serve the dealers. "It’s a real convenience for our dealers because the customer can get cash and go back to the booth," Blakewood said. "A lot of people don’t intend to spend money but they end up seeing something they want, and come back two or three times to the machine." The largest business in Waldo, a small town in north central Florida, the Farmers and Flea Market houses 600 indoor and 400 outdoor booths spread out on 50 acres on both sides of highway 301. Blakewood calls the flea market "eBay in 3D," where people buy and sell all sorts of new and used merchandise. Each weekend, 35,000 people visit the market from all over the southeast. Most of the dealers sell merchandise on the weekend to supplement their income. They’re not full-time merchants with payment card terminals. Most do not even accept checks. Instead, cash is king at the Waldo Farmers and Flea Market. Although some customers may withdraw cash to use elsewhere, Blakewood estimates that about 50 percent of the money flows to the flea market dealers and the revenue generated by the transaction fees supplements the flea market income. By way of comparison, experts estimate that about 30 percent of the cash withdrawn in a convenience store is spent in the store. Blakewood typically opens the ATMs on Friday afternoons to allow dealers to pay their booth rental fees in cash. Then customers tap the machines all weekend. He sets the fee at a reasonable $2 per transaction, with a $200 limit per transaction. Other flea markets charge as much as $5 per transaction, but Blakewood prefers to keep the transaction cost low to encourage repeat use. The flea market started with one Triton machine, but the popularity quickly proved the need for a second machine. "We put in a second machine to handle the volume, so we wouldn’t have a line, or we had a back up in case one machine went down," Blakewood said. Blakewood values the simplicity and reliability of the Triton equipment. He performs most maintenance himself, and through its easy to use management functions, can manage and change the denominations for dispensing. Originally he filled it with $10 bills, thinking that people would be more likely to spend in $10 increments at the flea market. However, he had to refill the machine too often, because people were spending more than he anticipated. Switching to $20 bills meant more cash flowing to the vendors. Blakewood also paid particular attention to security. Each machine is housed in a secure enclosure with a roll-down door, inside a lockable room. Double alarms deter would-be thieves. "The Triton machines have worked out quite well for us," Blakewood said. "I would highly recommend Triton ATMs to other flea market owners, not only to provide more cash to your customers but also as an additional source of income." |
