EMV Upgrade and Compliance FAQs

Understanding EMV

EMV® is the accepted standard for credit and debit payment cards built on chip card technology developed by Europay MasterCard, and VISA. In 2009, there were over 940 million EMV® compliant chip-based payment cards in use globally. Interac, the dominant Canadian Network for ATM transactions, has adopted the CHIP technology.

EMV® chip-based payment cards, also known as smart cards, contain an embedded microprocessor. The microprocessor chip contains the information needed to use the card for payment, and is protected by various security features, providing increased protection against counterfeit and lost and stolen card fraud by validating the card and the cardholder. Since chip cards are a more secure alternative to traditional magnetic stripe payment cards, by 2010 , Interac CHIP requirements are that at least 50% of ATMs in Canada must accept this technology.

ATMGurus leads the way to Interac CHIP compliance requirements with Canadian EMV® upgrade kits that include EMV®/CHIP card readers and PCI CHIP compliant EPPs available for Triton ATM models 8100, 9100, 9600, 9700, RL1600, RL2000, RL5000, RT2000 and FT5000. We make EMV®/CHIP migration easy. As you know, the deadline approaches for EMV® Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for chip-based payment cards and acceptance devices, including point of sale (POS) terminals and ATMs. We help facilitate global interoperability and compatibility of chip-based payment cards and acceptance devices.

Take action today to beat compliance deadlines by ordering your EMV Upgrade kits early. Don't risk fines by playing the waiting game.

Triton's Key Management Solution

New Technology Cuts Maintenance Time and Expenses for Off-Premise ATM Operators. Until recently in order to load master keys on an ATM, deployers were required to have two technicians enter the master keys into the ATM's keypad and send it out to the site, or have two people visit the site so that each technician entered only one half of the master key. This is a very costly and time consuming task.

Now, rather than having to pay two people to manually enter keys, Triton's Key Management (TKM) solution uses cryptography to remotely load keys directly from the host to the ATM across a public network. This allows ATM owners, especially those with large ATM fleets or those that operate in markets that require that master keys be changed frequently, to save time and money while improving security and increasing uptime.

Triton is the first ATM manufacturer to bring this cost-saving solution and security feature to the off-premise market. Click here to see the keypads we sell that support TKM technology.

PCI Upgrade FAQ

  • What is the "multifunction board"?
The Multifunction board combines the memory expansion board and the tri-port board (with speech) into one board. You will replace the current quad or tri-port board with this new multifunction board. Note that speech is not supported in Canada.
  • What is the "secure SPED board"?
The secure SPED board mounts to the back of the control panel. All cabling attaches to the secure SPED board to connect the various electrical components together.
  • I already have a memory expansion board– can I still use it?
Yes, the old memory expansion board can still be used. There is a jumper setting on the old board that must change, but once that is done it can be used as ad flash. Instructions on how to reconfigure the older memory board are detailed in the kit’s Installation guide.
  • Won’t some end users think this looks like a skimming device?
The 9600 PCI Upgrade includes a mounting bezel with the ATMGurus name and website embossed into it, adding legitimacy to the product with a properly manufactured appearance. Additionally, the software has been modified to show the 9600 PCI Upgrade on the Welcome and PIN entry screens.
  • Can I use the new software with old EPPs, like the T3 VEPP?
No, the new software only supports the new T7 EPP. For this reason, the software is not backwardly compatible.
  • Why does the Canadian Kit come with a new paper roll bracket?
The EMV card reader is slightly bigger than the older DIP reader. The new paper roll bracket moves the paper roll back a little bit to keep the receipt paper roll from hitting the card reader and binding.
  • What software version should I use?

The US hardware kit is designed to work with the latest 9600 US software.

  • What about tech support? Don’t you charge for a 9600 call now?
Triton began charging for technical support on the 9600 in January 2009 (Tech Bulletin#09-01). This policy continues to be in effect. However, technical support will be available at no cost for customers calling in with questions that are specific to the installation of their 9600 PCI EPP upgrade.

ADA Compliance Kits

What is required for ADA compliance?  (No safe harbor clause)

  • RL/FT/RT, 9100 color, and 9700 support speech
  • 9100 mono, 8100, and 9600 require an upgrade kit
  • Required to ID the location of the head phone jack
  • Only FT/RT contained a Braille decal from the beginning
  • Ensure all models contain Braille decal

What is NOT required for ADA compliance?

  • Only applies if the ATM is not “altered” (i.e., moved)
  • If you move it, you must comply with the below details
Height/Reach (48” height/10” reach)
  • All models meet this requirement except 9600s produced prior to Dec 2000 (51” height)
Keypad Symbols (O, <, X, “pip” on 5 key, +/-)
  • New keypads meet this requirement
  • Upgrade kits for those ATMs that do not
